UPLift Your Life for professionals: Your opportunity to learn, participate in, and deliver an innovative and effective therapy
Below is a 2 minute video by Professor Shannon Sauer-Zavala, co-developer of the Unified Protocol
UPLift Your Life is an engaging, interactive group therapy and digital self-help programme based on the Unified Protocol for the transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders (UP). During 2025, this treatment will be available as part of a clinical trial at participating NHS Trusts.

UPLift Your Life has been designed to improve the clinical and cost-effectiveness of therapy available in the NHS. This treatment is available for patients who are eligible for high intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in participating NHS Talking Therapies Services. The clinical trial has been funded by Innovate UK. It has received approval by an NHS research ethics committee (Ref: 23/LO/0487), and the study protocol has been pre-registered in the open science framework.

We expect this UPLift Your Life group therapy programme to be more cost-effective than individually-delivered CBT for the following reasons:

  1. The UP is an evidence-based and effective therapy, with more than 70 studies showing that it is effective for a wide range of mental health problems (depression, anxiety, phobias, somatoform, OCD, PTSD, panic).
  2. Current evidence from randomised controlled trials indicates that the UP is equally as effective as disorder-specific CBT treatment protocols for depression and more effective for anxiety.
  3. It has been shown that it can be delivered online and in a group therapy, with equally effective outcomes.
  4. This treatment is highly structured and organised into a series of treatment modules applying CBT-based case formulation and intervention strategies, making it easy for experienced CBT therapists to learn and to deliver it competently. The videos and interactive coping skills available in the UPLift Your Life portal takes care of the psycho-educational side of the treatment, leaving the therapist to do what they do best: support patients to make sense of their problems using case formulation and to learn new ways to cope with emotional problems.
  5. The therapy groups will include up to 10 patients, thus enabling therapists to help many more people than they would in typical one-to-one appointments. This will make access to therapy faster for patients who consent to receiving group therapy, helping to reduce waiting times for high intensity therapies.
NHS Trusts that participate in this clinical trial will receive administrative support to enlist their patients in the therapy and to track clinical outcomes using the questionnaires that are routinely collected by NHS Talking Therapies Services.
CBT therapists working in participating services will receive two days of training by experts who co-developed the UPLift Your Life programme, as well as additional clinical supervision to master this treatment protocol and group therapy process. CBT therapists will receive continuing practice development (CPD) certificates issued by the University of Sheffield.
